These installation instructions are designed to help you install PDS Ledger or Ledger/Payroll using the program CD. After you verify that your computer meets the system requirements, you can begin installation.

Installation Instructions

After you reviewed system requirements, you can install the PDS program. Locate the Ledger or Ledger/Payroll CD and license information sent to you, and then follow these steps:

These instructions help you install Ledger and Ledger/Payroll. For the purpose of these instructions, we refer to the product as Ledger/Payroll, but the same instructions apply for Ledger.

To install Ledger/Payroll as a stand-alone copy on a workstation
  1. Insert the Ledger/Payroll CD into your computer's CD drive, and wait as the installer program automatically opens.
  2. Click Setup Ledger and Ledger/Payroll to open the Welcome page of the setup wizard.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Read the License Agreement. If you accept the terms of the agreement, select I Accept the EULA Terms and click Next.
  5. In the Program Folder field, enter the path to the location where you want to store your program files. You can usually accept the default location. If you upgrade from an earlier version of Ledger/Payroll, this is the folder where the earlier version is installed. Only the program is overwritten, not your data.
  6. In the Data Folder field, enter the path to the location where you want to store your data files. You can usually accept the default location.
  7. Click Next, and wait as the files install.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Restart Ledger/Payroll, and then enter your license information when prompted.

To set up a Ledger/Payroll shared network database on a server
  1. Use Windows Explorer to browse the server hard drive.
  2. Note how the server name appears in My Network Places. This information is needed when you access the shared network database from a workstation.
  3. Create a folder on the hard drive, and name it so that it is associated with Ledger/Payroll.
  4. Right-click on the folder.
  5. Select Sharing and Security.
  6. On the Sharing tab, select Share this folder
  7. Note the Share name.  This information is needed when you access the shared network database from a workstation.
  8. Click Permissions.
  9. In Permissions for Everyone, select all check boxes in the Allow column.
  10. Click OK two consecutive times to close both open dialog boxes.
  11. In Windows Explorer, the folder appears with the "shared" attribute.
  12. After these steps are completed, Ledger/Payroll can be installed on the server.

To install and configure Ledger/Payroll on a networked workstation to access a shared network database
  1. Insert the Ledger/Payroll CD into your computer's CD drive, and wait as the installer program automatically opens.
  2. In the Main Menu window, click Setup Ledger and Ledger/Payroll to open the Welcome screen of the setup wizard.
  3. Click Next.
  6. In the Data Folder field, enter the location of the data folder where you set up the "share" on the server. Use the UNC (Universal Naming Convention). The UNC contains the two names you made note of during the configuration of the server (see steps 2 & 7 in the procedure above).
  7. Click Next, and wait as the files install.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Restart Ledger/Payroll, and enter your license information when prompted.
  10. On each system desktop, right-click the Ledger/Payroll icon.
  11. Select Properties.
  12. Click the Shortcut tab.
  13. In the Target field, set the D= parameter to the location of the "shared" Ledger/Payroll data directory on the server. It is the same location on all workstations in the network that have Ledger/Payroll installed.
