At the core of every City group is communication between its participants, which is made possible by five different types of posts: topics, events, prayers, needs, and albums. These enable the group to coordinate activities, share prayers, or have discussions.

Start a New Post

On the news feed and in any group, you can begin a new post by clicking the Start a New Post link. Which type you choose depends on what you're trying to accomplish, but there are some things about all post types that are the same.

Email Alerts

All types of posts trigger email alerts for group participants. Depending on how they've toggled their email settings, most participants receive an email alert that someone in the group has started a new post, and then again whenever someone else replies to it. You can make replies by visiting The City or via email.

Posting Options

When creating a post, there are several posting options that you can apply to change how that post works. To further the reach of any post, the user can share or publish it to the Plaza.

Types of Posts

Finally, to add a level of accountability to each group, leaders and managers have special access to edit, delete, or feature posts in their groups. They can even specify which types of post can be made in their groups.

Types of Posts

Topic: A topic facilitates either group conversations or one-way broadcasts from leaders.

Event: This type of post reflects a real-world event including the time, date, location, and participant interaction.

Prayer: This type of post provides a space to have a discussion surrounding the need for prayer. The creator of a prayer has the ability to post an update. This lets people follow God’s ongoing story in this person’s life. Also, when you watch a prayer, it's automatically added to your  prayer list.

Need: This kind of post allows group participants to share a real-life need with their community. A need provides a space for group participants to discuss an opportunity to serve. It also allows you to create tasks for people to perform, as well as a location, so everyone knows where to go. The most special feature of a need, though, is the ability to turn it into a service opportunity.

Album: An album is a completely different type of post than all the others, providing a space for uploading photos of group activities, life milestones, or anything else that may be encouraging or edifying to a group. Because it's so different than the other types, there are some features and options available to other posts that are not available here.

Things to Remember

Group administrators or group leaders can customize features of a group, so you may not have the Start a New Post option in every group, or you may have a limited set of post types in some groups.
